Symbol of free west

Is it possible that in years to come Prince's '1999' will gain a whole new relevance in much the same way that the entire 'Big Chill' soundtrack has to people of my parents generation and we will be on walking frames "partying like it's 1999" because it is our last vestige of hipness* that we happened to be young enough to enjoy the changing of the millenium?

I myself feel that my partying skils have improved vastly since 1999 and also the 1999/2000 new year's, although spent at a coolsie party was not my fave. But as no other years were immortalised in a top 10 rock hit, I guess that's what I'm stuck with.

* Am well aware that in using the phrase 'hipness' have discounted myself from this scenario altogether. So, so sorry.

Oh, that was a crazy new years eve. So many memories. So much cask wine. And - most precious of all - so many people I loved in such a confined space (and a billion strangers who also wanted to stand under the Harbour Bridge at midnight).

And, sadly, probably the height of my partying days.

Sigh.

Thanks for the memories, Gigglewick.

I remember thinking that when 2000 came around, I'd be sooo old. *sighs*

I remember as a 15 y.o. singing along to Pulp's Disco 2000 and thinking 'Wow, I really will be fully grown in the year 2000!'.
The Millennium bash I attended was with Miss Audrey and others in a suburban backyard. There were about 15 people there, 7 of whom I counted as friends then. I only see 2 of them now.
I party way more hearty these days, although 2004 was my peak...

I really don't think that the Prince song is a stayer. That particular year a friend of mine and I had what now seems a rather stupid standing order that for the whole 12 months, no matter the situation, if you heard Prince's 1999 you were obliged to chug a beer.

Admittedly, I was listening more to RRR than Fox at the time but still I stayed relatively sober that year.

If we are going to reclaim the many changing named one's song I say lets reclaim the word hipness as well. Its not like the youngsters of today have come up with anything new and exciting to replace it. Or have they?

I know that my partying skillz have improved since 1999 - seeing as I saw in the New Millenium playing board games with my aunts & uncles in an Edwardian Semi in Manchester.
Now I choose to party with actual friends! My own age!
So, although I have a soft spot for Prince and his Little Red Corvette (and his Raspberry Beret), he can go get stuffed with his partying ways.

Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" is hot, but not really a bust it song. I like how he defies the notion of masculine sexuality.

I've had better millenium changes too. The last 2 years were pretty good actually. Whadda ya know? It DOES get better.

Chesty,

My pleasure.

Chai,

And did you reveal yourself to be so?

Nai,

Funny you can identify a year as a peak...I think my reduced opportunities to "party" now mean my commitment to it is significantly increased.

KR,

I guess we could do that. And no, they haven't.

Actonb,

I kind of dislike Prince. I can't figure out if he's a misogynist (my preferred option) or if he *loves* women.

Audrey,

Further to the above, it's how that definition alters the calibration of female sexuality that I don't like - operational definitions through absence in narrative etc. But Nothing Compares 2 U is indeed very very good. But like Aretha Franklin's version of 'Respect', it's the female voice that defines its power I reckon.
