Do I have to: the music issue

Songs I still like even though history has judged them horribly uncool

‘Staring at the Embers’ – Tim Finn
‘Wuthering Heights’ – Kate Bush
‘Steam’ – Peter Gabriel
‘Positive Bleeding’ – Urge Overkill
‘Quasimodo’s Dream’ – covered by Kate Ceberano (original version by The (inestimably cooler) Reels)

Songs I can no longer listen to without cringing that I once liked a lot

‘Train of Thought’ – The Sharp
‘Nobody’ – The Hoodoo Gurus
‘Whisper’ – Schnell Fenster
‘Apple Eyes’ – Swoop
pretty much anything by The Dead Salesmen*

Songs which, in my opinion, remain under-rated

‘Time after Time’ – The Beloved**
‘Jet Boy/Jet Girl’ – Spencer P. Jones
‘My Heart Sings’ – Rebecca’s Empire
‘’I Kicked a Boy’ – The Sundays
‘Pineapple Head’ – Crowded House

Songs I wish I could remember

That song by our friend’s band that my friend L and I used to like when we were in Year 12***

Songs I wish I could forget

‘The Sign’ – Ace of Base
‘Central Park New York’ – The Wiggles
‘I don’t know anybody else’ – Black Box
The jingle for Ballarat’s Begonia Festival circa 1985 (never updated)
‘Colossal’ - Wolfmother

* Not entirely sure this is the Dead Salesmen’s fault. Seriously, I put the CD on a couple of weeks ago and could not listen to it, no matter how hard I tried. Sorry, Hap.

** Not to be confused with the Cyndi Lauper song of the same name.

*** She quoted it to me recently and I possibly looked at her like she was insane.

When did the Urge Overkill get not cool? No-one ever tells me these things and I walk around thinking I'm cool and really I'm a loser.

I totally agree on the Swoop thing too - one of my friends introduced me even before they got big and I thought they were great. It hasn't lasted.

My big one for songs I can no longer listen to without cringing is anything by Powderfinger. I used to love their stuff and played a couple of their albums to death, now they're the most skipped band on my ipod, every time. Don't know why.

I can't listen to Oasis without cringing as it reminds me of a particular time in my life, a particular ex-boyfriend and then I remember what wankers the Gallagher brothers are.

You are a scream, Gigglewick. Thanks for making my hung over Ballarat friday a little less painful.

Redcap,

I am giggling. If only we could all dance in a field with a floaty dress and have the camera cut away to us waving ever further in the background. Take me home to wuthering, wuthering, wuthering heights....

CL,

Can't tell you - but think it's related to the whole "we're over Pulp Fiction" thing. I still like them though, obvs.

Can listen to Corduroy still, but Swoop - what the hell? Powderfinger I still like - although have been with them since the days of 'Grave Concern', so I'm committed.

KR,

I hear you. That relates to my inability to listen to 'Nobody' by HG also.

Anon,

You are most welcome/kind.

I assume by "scream" you mean "hideously entertaining expressed in manner of 1960s stereotyped effete boys" and not "about to be hit by a truck".

Oh, that cutaway-in-the-field-with-floaty-dress thingy is truly my dream. That and being Queen of the Universe with Clive Owen as my slightly surly sex slave.

I was working on a post pretty similar to this one, which I'll put on my blog in about four months in the hope that that way people will quit telling me that my blog is a bit like yours only not as funny, and I considered putting "Apple Eyes" on teh list of songs I used to be obsessed wqith but can't remember why, but then I realised that, surprisingly enough, it fit in much better on the list of songs I am still obsessed with and I don't care who knows it.

I think it's the Vanilla Icesque optimism of if you got a problem tell me I can fix that does it for me.

"My Heart Sings" is one of the most under-rated songs ever, much like every other Rebecca's Empire song ever. Much as I amdeeply fond of that song, "Atomic Electric" will always be my first Empire love.

In conclusion, it is physically impossible to forget Ace of Base. I can still remember how to play "Lucky Love" on guitar, for goodness'.

Redcap,

Too much pressure. Also, cannot look at Clive Owen in a remotely positive light since 'Closer'.

INCraig,

Who are these people? I hope they're not your friends who should be siding-with-you-no-matter-what.

I don't believe I know 'Lucky Love', but I'll thank you not to sing it/play it in my presence.

Thank you so much for putting 'Apple Eyes' ihnto my head when I am so sick of every song on my mp3 player I may have to start listenning to Lao pop music (it makes the Spice Girls sound deep). Oh god, now I'm remembering the video to that damn song! I remmebering that bad cgi and tight, patterned pants featured heavily.

Nai,

Yes, bad bad fashion really was de rigeur where Swoop was concerned. On the other hand, she wasn't skinny and still wore whatever she liked, which I admire. The blokes on the other hand, have no excuse (including "being from Sydney").
